    Presence of an anti-viral factor in peritoneal dialysis effluent

    Presence of an anti-viral factor in peritoneal dialysis effluent. Viral peritonitis is an exceptionally rare occurrence in peritoneal dialysis. In fact, up to now, only one case report has been documented in the literature. In a prospective study, peritoneal dialysis effluent (PDE) was specifically cultured for the following viruses: the herpes group of viruses, including herpes simplex types I (HSV) and II, cytomegalovirus (CMV) and varicella-zoster (V-Z), and the enteroviruses group including coxsackie B-5 (Cox B), echo, enterovirus and polio. Cultures were performed under both basal conditions and in the presence of peritonitis. No viral growth was demonstrated. The possible existence of an anti-viral factor in the PDE was therefore raised. In order to investigate this hypothesis, the PDE of 16 patients undergoing intermittent peritoneal dialysis and of 24 patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis were examined for anti-viral activity. The method used was analogous to that employed for testing the anti-viral effect of interferon (IFN). The inhibition of the cytopathic effect (CPE) of various viruses was examined in the following tissue cultures: Vero cells (a line of monkey kidney cells) incubated with HSV, vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) and Cox B; human kidney cells incubated with parainfluenza 3 (Para-3); human foreskin fibroblasts incubated with CMV, HSV and VSV and L-929 (a line of mouse cells) incubated with VSV. As control, unused Dianeal (Travenol, Ashdod, Israel) 1.5 and 4.25 g/dl, normal saline and 5 g/dl dextrose solutions were tested under the same conditions using VSV on Vero. The PDE was also examined for the presence of specific anti-viral antibodies by microneutralization and ELISA tests. The presence of human IFN (β and γ) was evaluated by radioimmunoassay using anti IFN monoclonal antibodies. Human IFN a was tested by a bioassay using MBDK cells with VSV. PDE from both patients on intermittent peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis inhibited the cytopathic activity of all the viruses tested in the various tissue cultures, except for the mouse line of cells. No such inhibition was seen with the control solutions. Only antibodies to HSV were detected in the PDE and their titer did not correlate with the inhibition of cytopathic effect. Human IFN aα, β and γ were not detected. These studies suggest that PDE contains an anti-viral factor which is not a known IFN or an anti-viral antibody. This factor is active against both RNA and DNA viruses in both human and monkey cell cultures

    Distinguishing sequences for partially specified FSMs

    Distinguishing Sequences (DSs) are used inmany Finite State Machine (FSM) based test techniques. Although Partially Specified FSMs (PSFSMs) generalise FSMs, the computational complexity of constructing Adaptive and Preset DSs (ADSs/PDSs) for PSFSMs has not been addressed. This paper shows that it is possible to check the existence of an ADS in polynomial time but the corresponding problem for PDSs is PSPACE-complete. We also report on the results of experiments with benchmarks and over 8 * 106 PSFSMs. © 2014 Springer International Publishing

    Enrichment of antioxidant capacity and vitamin E in pita made from barley

    This study aimed to enhance total antioxidant and vitamin E content of pita bread, by replacing 50% of the standard baker's flour with flours milled from covered (WI2585 and Harrington) or hulless (Finniss) barley genotypes, previously shown to have high antioxidant and vitamin E levels at harvest. Pita breads were made from either 100% baker's flour (control) or 50% malt flour, whole-grain flour, or flour from barley grains pearled at 10%, 15%, and 20% grain weight. Antioxidant capacity and vitamin E content of flours and pitas were determined by their ability to scavenge 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals and high performance liquid chromatography, respectively. The physical and sensory properties of the pitas were also assessed. All pitas made from either whole grain or pearled barley flour had a higher antioxidant capacity and most also had higher vitamin E content than standard pita. The antioxidant and vitamin E levels were reduced in pearled compared to whole grains, however the extent of that reduction varied among genotypes. The greatest antioxidant and vitamin E levels were found in pita made from malt flour or Finniss whole grain flour. Furthermore, sensory analysis suggested these pitas were acceptable to consumers and retained similar physical and sensory properties to those in the control pita.Thi Thu Dung Do, Beverly Muhlhausler, Amanda Box and Amanda J.     Assessment of pulse rate variability by the method of pulse frequency demodulation

    BACKGROUND: Due to its easy applicability, pulse wave has been proposed as a surrogate of electrocardiogram (ECG) for the analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). However, its smoother waveform precludes accurate measurement of pulse-to-pulse interval by fiducial-point algorithms. Here we report a pulse frequency demodulation (PFDM) technique as a method for extracting instantaneous pulse rate function directly from pulse wave signal and its usefulness for assessing pulse rate variability (PRV). METHODS: Simulated pulse wave signals with known pulse interval functions and actual pulse wave signals obtained from 30 subjects with a trans-dermal pulse wave device were analyzed by PFDM. The results were compared with heart rate and HRV assessed from simultaneously recorded ECG. RESULTS: Analysis of simulated data revealed that the PFDM faithfully demodulates source interval function with preserving the frequency characteristics of the function, even when the intervals fluctuate rapidly over a wide range and when the signals include fluctuations in pulse height and baseline. Analysis of actual data revealed that individual means of low and high frequency components of PRV showed good agreement with those of HRV (intraclass correlation coefficient, 0.997 and 0.981, respectively). CONCLUSION: The PFDM of pulse wave signal provides a reliable assessment of PRV. Given the popularity of pulse wave equipments, PFDM may open new ways to the studies of long-term assessment of cardiovascular variability and dynamics

    The sugar and energy in non-carbonated sugar-sweetened beverages: a cross-sectional study.

    BACKGROUND: The consumption of non-carbonated sugar-sweetened beverages (NCSSBs) has many adverse health effects. However, the sugar and energy content in NCSSBs sold in China remain unknown. We aimed to investigate the sugar and energy content of NCSSBs in China and how these contents were labelled. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 15 supermarkets in Haidian District, Beijing from July to October 2017. The product packaging and nutrient information panels of NCSSBs were recorded to obtain type of products (local/imported), serving size, nutrient contents of carbohydrate, sugar and energy. For those NCSSBs without sugar content information, we used carbohydrate content as a replacement. RESULTS: A total of 463 NCSSBs met the inclusion criteria and were included in our analysis. The median of sugar content and energy content was 9.6 [interquartile range (IQR): 7.1-11.3] g/100 ml and 176 (IQR: 121-201) kJ/100 ml. The median of sugar contents in juice drinks, tea-based beverages, sports drinks and energy drinks were 10.4, 8.5, 5.0 and 7.4 g/100 ml. Imported products had higher sugar and energy content than local products. There were 95.2% products of NCSSBs receiving a 'red'(high) label for sugars per portion according to the UK criteria, and 81.6% products exceeding the daily free sugar intake recommendation from the World Health Organization (25 g). There were 82 (17.7%) products with sugar content on the nutrition labels and 60.2% of them were imported products. CONCLUSIONS: NCSSBs had high sugar and energy content, and few of them provided sugar content information on their nutrition labels especially in local products. Measures including developing better regulation of labelling, reducing sugar content and restricting the serving size are needed for reducing sugar intakes in China
